Speech Pathology for Teenagers

Your teenager is almost an adult and while they may need some support with their fluency, literacy or social communication, they’ll be treated like an adult. We’ll take a friendly approach to give them support without being condescending.

Signs your teen might benefit from speech pathology

Being a teenager (and raising one) comes with some stressful years. It can be even more stressful if you’re having difficulty with communication, language or literacy.

Language

Sometimes your teenager’s lack of communication might be a sign of difficulties with language. It’s not necessarily that they don’t want to speak — it’s that they don’t have the language to answer questions how they might like to.

We can support your teenager to become more confident in their language through language assessments and tailored support.

Listening Skills

Does your teenager seem to miss important information or reminders? Do they come home exhausted each day? Do they seem unmotivated to speak with you, the wider family, or even their friends? They may be having difficulty with listening.

Listening troubles can often stem from a lack of connection or firing in the brain. Whether we can link what we hear with what is actually meant, will feed into whether we’re able to actually listen. It’s about taking the sound into our brain, processing it, and understanding what is being said — both at a word-level and a social communication level.

We use a variety of interventions and techniques to support teenagers with their listening and comprehension skills.

Literacy

As we grow and navigate our way through high school and potentially tertiary education, the need for good literacy skills will continue to build. We’ll work with your teenager to assess and highlight any gaps in their language and literacy developments and work with them through tailored interventions to fill in these gaps.

Stuttering

Stuttering or cluttering can lead to decreased communication from your teenager and quality of communication. We work with teenagers to solve difficulties with stuttering and cluttering. We often use The Camperdown Program for teenagers and adults with stutters. This course can integrate social anxiety management as well.

We work with a range of conditions

Don’t see the specific signs your teenager is experiencing above? We may still be able to offer you both some support as we work with a broad range of conditions. Give our team a call or fill in the form on our contact page.

How does speech pathology work?

No two teenagers are the same and nor are their fluency, voice, or social communication goals. So, neither is how we deliver our speech therapies. Our Speechies work with your teenager to develop custom, strengths-based activities to achieve their communication goals.

How can I prepare for my teenager’s first appointment?

You’ll need to have a discussion with your teenager about speech pathology and how it will benefit them. Call our office to discuss your teenager’s needs and find out how we can support them to improve their fluency, literacy or social communication.
